Survival Suits, Flotation and Life Jackets
A good survival suit can mean the difference between life and death. Survival Suits
Survival suits are recommended for rescue workers on oil rigs, passenger ships, fishing boats and helicopter transport. This category comprises work suits, day suits and safety/abandonment suits. Dry suits provide adequate flotation and protection against loss of body heat, thus extending survival time in cold water. All suits are approved according to IMO/SOLAS requirements and EU-directives in Europe, as well as the US and Canadian Coast Guard.
Flotation Garments
A flotation garment provides enough buoyancy to keep an unconscious person afloat. Buoyancy foam protects against heat loss and extends survival time during a rescue operation from about 0.5 hours in normal garments to about 2.5 hours at 10°C. Suits and jackets are designed to be light and comfortable for daily work on or beside water.
Life Jackets
A life jacket provides buoyancy and turns an unconscious person in the water so that he floats on his back and can breathe. A flotation aid provides buoyancy to help a conscious person stay afloat. All Helly Hansen flotation aids and life jackets are made with flame retardant shells in high visibility orange. Inflatable life jackets provide superior comfort because they only inflate when needed. This makes them more likely to be worn whenever there is a risk of falling into water. SOLAS - approved life jackets have an automatic emergency light for visibility at night. An automatic device inflates the jacket when it is subjected to water or pressure. It can also be manually inflated. The life jackets and flotation aids meet or exceed all relevant safety requirements, but are manufactured in different types for different needs.
